INDEPENDENCE DAY Being Theatrically Re-released In 3D Next Summer! And More News From Fox...

Very cool information released from Fox today that affects us in many ways! First of all the big news is that Roland Emmerich's INDEPENDENCE DAY will be re-released in 3D on July 3, 2013. Despite some overly patriotic scenes, I simply loved the movie. Heck any movie with Jeff Goldblum in I love, but throw in some Will Smith and you've got a blockbuster.

There has been rumors for years about a potential sequel to the alien invasion movie (oops spoilers!) and with this conversion investment it seems that Fox is getting serious about the property once again. Will we see another installment eventually? Perhaps we'll know more by the time next summer rolls around.

I'm going to give you the official press release next and you can see how these announcements could affect 3D in a big way. Conceivably, 7 out of the 9 movies talked about could be in 3D! Read on...

Here's the PR (emphasis is mine):

On the heels of the $344 million worldwide success of TITANIC 3D, the studio and director Roland Emmerich, in conjunction with Stereo 3D, which did the work on TITANIC, will produce a top quality 3D version of the iconic INDEPENDENCE DAY. ID43D will be released worldwide on July 3, 2013.

The studio also staked its 2014 summer with three giant tentpoles. First up, Fox, together with Disney and Dreamworks, has shifted the release of Steven Spielberg’s epic ROBOPOCALYPSE to go worldwide on April 25, 2014, the same weekend that “Avengers” was released internationally this year. Disney distributes domestically. (ID43D now occupies its former release date.)

Then on Memorial Day (May 23, 2014), Fox unleashes DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES worldwide, the sequel to the $483 million grossing RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. Rupert Wyatt, who helmed the 2011 smash, returns to direct. The returning producers are Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

And on July 18, 2014, Fox releases worldwide the third of its summer tentpoles, the currently untitled X-MEN, to be directed by Matthew Vaughn.

Fox also announced its Christmas 2013 line-up, with THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, starring Ben Stiller and Kristin Wiig, and directed by Ben Stiller, set for Christmas Day. Samuel Goldwyn, John Goldwyn, Stuart Cornfeld and Ben Stiller produce the film.

Also for Christmas, the studio will shift WALKING WITH DINOSAURS from October 11 to December 20, 2013. The film is based on the massively successful TV series and live show, which has grossed more than $250 million in box office worldwide.

Other 2013 dates include the following: PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS, based on Rick Riordan’s publishing phenomenon, goes out August 16, 2013, moving from March 15. And Fox earlier announced that BeyoncĂ© Knowles would headline the voice cast of EPIC, in theaters May 24, 2013, from the makers of “Ice Age” and “Rio.” The film was previously known as “Leafmen.” Also joining the cast are Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Knoxville, Aziz Ansari, Jason Sudeikis, Steven Tyler, Blake Anderson and Judah Friedlander.

Lastly, an as-yet-untitled comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, directed by Paul Feig (BRIDESMAIDS) will land in theaters April 5, 2013.

So what do you think? With THE AVENGERS slaughter of the box office in tandem with the pending release of PROMETHEUS why would Fox not want to augment their films with some glorious 3D? Heck all of them could go 3D, but comedy has not fully embraced it yet.

Indeed, I'm looking for a trailblazing, cutting edge comedic director to step up and deliver the goods! I thought Todd Phillips was the man after I asked him about THE HANGOVER 2 conceivably going 3D, but he let me down without further consulting me! :-)

STILL Not Convinced? Check Out These FOUR New Clips From PROMETHEUS!! **SPOILERS**

Four more movie clips for you to enjoy (or not for you spoiler phobic readers!) of Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS. The clips are entitled: "Don't touch Anything", "Can't Let It Leave", "Before The Adventure" and "We Made You Because We Could".

I've heard through the grapevine that PROMETHEUS' 3D is done EXTREMELY well. As it should be with Ridley Scott, Red Epics and 3ality Technica working together to deliver the goods. So I can't wait for that.

I wasn't invited to the London premiere as some of you have mentioned, but I promise that we're working on something special with Fox and hopefully it comes to fruition. Can't say what yet, but I'll be consoled if it does!

So check out these clips if you dare! **SPOILERS!!** YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

IRON MAN 3 Update: Ben Kingsley Is The Mandarin? Guy Pierce Is Aldrich Killian? *AND* First Set Photos!!

IRON MAN 3 Set Location At Wilmington International Airport
Update on Shane Black's IRON MAN 3 now shooting in Wilmington, NC! Our friends over at LatinoReview got the goods on a potential casting scoop that sees Ben Kingsley suiting up as The Mandarin but not as originally suspected. He won't be the main antagonist but merely a distraction and partner to the real villain that Tony Stark must overcome, Guy Pierce's Aldrich Killian. Killian is a scientist who uncovers something called the Extremis Virus (potentially nanobot technology) which he then uses to create an "Extremis army" of superpowered evildoers.

Robert Downey Jr. On IRON MAN 3 Set
That being said, there is another movie site claiming that The Mandarin is the main villain. For a movie that only cameos The Mandarin there is a lot of action going on surrounding his character apparently. What sort of action? Well this came from CBM: "Those that did get a glimpse inside [the Cape Fear Club] reported seeing extras dressed in military uniforms and suits. The extras in suits were described as looking like Secret Service men." The site also claims that a source "involved with the production" reassured them that The Mandarin is "definitely" the villain. He said Mandarin had a set of twins that did most of his dirty work for him. Another source who had visited EUE/Screen Gems Studios told us that the sets they were building included Chinese storefronts."

And it's known that the next location for the IRON MAN production is China.

So I think it's safe to say that The Mandarin is definitely in IRON MAN 3 but to what extent has not been brought to light. With two different versions of what is going on with the movie I can only go by past performance with regard to sources and that means LatinoReview gets the nod. A limited exposure to The Mandarin, perhaps setting him up for another Marvel universe movie - though I can't see that happening with THE AVENGERS 2 as Thanos is set to reign.

IRON MAN 3 Set, Wilmington, NC
The closest thing we have to a storyline thus far came from producer Kevin Feige when he disclosed:
"So Iron Man 3 has been structured specifically to be the antidote to The Avengers... Circumstances in the story separate Tony from having access to anything. We wanted to take Tony back to, metaphorically speaking, the cave from Iron Man, the first half of Iron Man, when he's cut off from the world and needs just focus on his intellects to get himself out of his situation. So he's not calling Thor, he's not calling Captain America, he can't press a special button to have the helicarrier come rescue him, so I think that'll be a nice complement to the team up of Avengers."

I've selected a few shots from the Wilmington, NC sets for you to look at, but feel free to browse all of them right here.

Click here for all of our IRON MAN 3 coverage! IM3 opens on May 3, 2013. Still no official word on whether IM3 will be the first of the franchise and the fourth Marvel movie to be converted to 3D, but it's a safe wager at this point.

EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Corey Turner, 3D Visual Effects Supervisor On Sony's MEN IN BLACK 3

A special treat for you today as I have my recent interview with Corey Turner, 3D Visual Effects Supervisor for MEN IN BLACK 3!

Corey is an accomplished stereographer and while the title may change from project to project he essentially does the same work. He's worked on such mammoth projects as TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON, ALICE IN WONDERLAND and now MIB3.

He's also had an awesome background in motion and performance capture so he's pretty much done everything I think is cool in technology for Hollywood today!

Below is the timecode breakdown of the 30 minute conversation so you can quickly jump to a key area of interest for you if your under a time crunch. Otherwise I invite you to have a listen to the whole thing as we discuss modern 3D, the advances being made and of course the current box office champ MEN IN BLACK 3.

Interview Timecodes:
0:30 Exciting time for 3D
1:00 On how far 3D conversions have come
2:23 How was he drawn to MIB3
3:10 Why Barry Sonnenfeld chose 3D conversion
5:20 On exactly what his role was on the production
9:54 On how Barry made his job easier
11:52 What shot excited him the most
15:30 How the action was easier to do than the comedic scenes
16:10 Barry doesn't do any panning, which added a challenge for the stereo effect
17:03 Prime Focus was the major 3D conversion house on this production
18:15 On not wanting to be considered a 3D conversion, but a 3D movie
19:15 On rendering native 3D effects shots and adding it to converted 3D
20:20 The major vendors: Prime Focus, Imageworks and Method
21:15 There were 700 VFX shots (1800 shots total)
21:34 On how many seats did Prime Focus use to get the job done (~600)
22:00 On his background in motion and performance capture
24:02 On whether there was mocap on MIB3 or was it all Rick Baker
25:36 Tips for up and coming stereographers
27:00 What's next for him regarding other projects (secretive answer!)

My thanks to Corey for taking the time to speak with me about MIB3 and 3D in general and of course Sony for setting this up for the awesome 3D readers of MarketSaw!

MEN IN BLACK 3 is currently #1 at the box office - if you haven't seen it, get out and get it done! I loved it and the movie effectively puts the finishing touches on an exceptional franchise. The 3D is beyond reproach - wonderfully done, thanks to people like Corey Turner and his team.

THOR 2 Will NOT Feature Thanos But Another Major Villain Plus Loki!

THOR 2!!! Yes. And another major villain! Mads Mikkelson perhaps? I think that's the safe bet as he is confirmed to be joining the production as a villain - and you don't get much better than him really. I am a big fan of his work - you could see his raw talent going as far back as PUSHER. He can say so much with just a look - he doesn't even have to verbalize.

So some questions! What villain will Mikkelson be playing? Will he be teaming up with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) who is definitely in the sequel? Some have been speculating that Mads will be playing The Executioner. Hmmm.

One thing is for sure: Thanos will NOT be worshipping death in this movie. Producer Kevin Feige spoke about the super villain and THOR 2 to Empire: "No, future, future. But there will be a major new villain. A major, major new antagonist..."

I have to agree with Marvel's line of thinking here. Keep the uber villain until THE AVENGERS 2 and keep bringing out the rich library of antagonists from Marvel's vault. And I certainly want these villains to be authentically from Marvel and not newly created villains. Why on earth would you do that?

So what else did the super producer have to say about THOR 2? Says Feige: "We're going to see the other side of Asgard. It's not all polished and golden in this film. And the events of Avengers will have affected Thor for sure. His relationship with Loki will continue to evolve, and the biggest part is Natalie and Thor returning with Jane Foster."

Mads Mikkelson in VALHALLA RISING
THOR 2 is looking exceptionally bright with the addition of Mads. Man I love how Marvel casts their movies! Joining Mads will be Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard, Jaimie Alexander and Ray Stevenson.

Marvel will begin shooting the production this summer in London and it is being directed by Alan Taylor (GAME OF THRONES). You can set aside theater time in your calendar for the movie starting on November 15, 2013.

Must Watch: New Overseas Trailer For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: New Scenes!

Hey guys, if you have already seen the trailers that exist already, seeing this one won't spoil too much more for you. A bit more humor and a bit more Connors. Personally, I recommend watching it if only to see a tiny bit more of the humor that should be present in any Spider-man film.

Here's the storyline:
One of the world’s most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in The Amazing Spider-Man. Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theaters everywhere in 3D on July 3, 2012.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN opens on July 3.

PROMETHEUS Setting Box Office Records Already! *AND* Learn About The Awesome Tech Behind The Movie!!

Of course it is going to do well at the box office, you can take that for granted. But just how well will it do? From the first indicators - VERY well. PROMETHEUS has eclipsed AVATAR and HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 in pre-sales at the BFI IMAX theater in London. That means that over 30,000 people have bought advance tickets to the tune of $737,588 from ONE theater.

BFI had booked 18,287 tickets after just one week of sales ($474,687) which set a new high for them in pre-sales, and now the records just keep falling to PROMETHEUS as time rolls along toward its release date.

Here's the storyline for the movie:

Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Can this ONE theater hit $1 million in pre-sales before the release of the movie on June 8th? Sure is nice to think so.

*AND*

PROMETHEUS has over 1400 3D visual effects shots. They used software programs like Autodesk's Maya (3D animation), Pixar's Renderman (ray-traced scenes), Adobe AfterEffects (for well, after effects!) and The Foundry's NUKE (compositing) to name several.

Ten different VFX companies tackled the work, though Moving Picture Company garnered the most. To me, this is very exciting. I have often found various effects houses to have their "brand" all over their work - like in TRANSFORMERS I found ILM to have ample superiority over hard edged robots and buildings while a company like Weta Digital has the finest control over rounded creatures like humans and faces in particular. Combine them and you have one heckuva effects movie. It's exciting to me to see another visual effects house getting the bulk of the work because we may see things we've never seen before! Not that these guys haven't been around for awhile - they have. They've worked and are working on movies like CLASH OF THE TITANS, SKYFALL, SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL, WORLD WAR Z, 47 RONIN, LIFE OF PI, etc. But let's face it, they were chosen as the led effects shops over ILM and Weta and it should look slightly different and exciting. I saw things in TITANS for example that blew my mind! Can't wait!!

Ridley Scott used Red Epic cameras on 3ality Technica Atom rigs. He had four mounted rigs (with the same configurations) and one steadicam for the bulk of the shoot. The consistent configurations of the mounted rigs eased editing a great deal.

The cameras were all connected to 3ality's Stereo Image Processors (SIPs) for the recording of all the data bursting forth from those VERY high resolution cameras. The SIPs also helped maintain speedy transitions when lens needed to be changed or cameras realigned. The technology goes further by offering advice on the fly to the filmmakers on convergence (creating a single image from two different camera image angles converged on the same point in space), interaxial (the distance between the two camera's lenses - like our eyes) settings and any alerts.

These settings are EXTREMELY important for a comfortable viewing experience. The settings must be correct during transitions or it will be quite jarring to the audience. Those SIPs track these configurations and help eliminate any transition issues.

The PROMETHEUS team actually shot far more resolution than what was necessary for the final 2K product. In fact they shot at 5K and 120 frames per second! They used the extra space surrounding the final viewable product to assist in eliminating edge artifacts (as shown in the image).

The idea and thrust behind the PROMETHEUS technology was to get the 3D workflow as close to 2D and from the sound of this fine report that was accomplished. 3ality Technica's tech allows for the same number of 3D setups in a shooting day as 2D. There is no real excuse now in saying that 3D is slower because you are setting up 2 cameras, not 1. There is no longer an excuse that the 3D cameras and rigs are too big - they aren't now!

The new technology here eliminates these things from the equation and gives time back to the filmmaker to be as creative as they can be and not worry about the optics. PROMETHEUS is set to fully enjoy the reaction from audiences worldwide on what they have accomplished.

I fully endorse the write up that Electronic Design did on this. Check it out.

Must See: New Images From THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Oh yes - love the shot of Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy swinging down to the street! What a shot. Too bad the EW watermark has to be everywhere on these things though.

Can't wait to see these visuals - the color usage alone has my interest piqued. Add on 3D and well, we'll be in the comics themselves :-)

Red Band, NSFW And Whatever Else You Want To Call It - New Featurette For PIRANHA 3DD!!

Yes, this is very much not safe for work. The latest bit of marketing for PIRANHA 3DD hits the spinning Internet via FunnyorDie and actually is quite funny! I mean with The Hoff and Gary Busey and all, how can you go wrong?

The movie is blatant sexism though, so if you watch it, be prepared. It's audience knows who they are and they are marketing DIRECTLY at them with this featurette.

Have a look if you dare! There is actually a spoiler in this thing, so again YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Here's the movie's storyline:
After the terror unleashed on Lake Victoria in PIRANHA 3D, the pre-historic school of blood thirsty piranhas are back. This time, no one is safe from the flesh eating fish as they sink their razor sharp teeth into the visitors of summer’s best attraction, The Big Wet Water Park. Christopher Lloyd (BACK TO THE FUTURE) reprises his role as the eccentric piranha expert with survivor Paul Scheer (THE LEAGUE) and a partially devoured Ving Rhames (PULP FICTION) back for more fish frenzy. David Hasselhoff trades in the sandy beaches of “Baywatch” to be a celebrity lifeguard at the racy water park. Prepare for double the terror, double the action and double the D’s in this sequel also starring Gary Busey (LETHAL WEAPON), Katrina Bowden (30 ROCK), Danielle Panabaker (THE CRAZIES), Matt Bush (ADVENTURELAND), Chris Zylka (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) and David Koechner (ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY).

PIRANHA 3DD opens June 1.

TWO More Featurettes For PROMETHEUS!!

It isn't going to stop guys! More to tantalize you about the upcoming return to the ALIEN universe by Ridley Scott. We have two more PROMETHEUS featurettes for you, one focusing on 3D and shooting the movie and the second featuring actor Logan Marshall-Green.

I'm going to say that there are spoilers in these because I can't be sure how much you have seen individually at this point and what you haven't seen. If you watch them - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Love the behind the scenes looks with the 3ality Technica rigs and Red Epic cameras in the first featurette. You can tell that the visuals in this movie are going to be probably the best ever captured thus far just based on technology advances alone. We are in for a serious, serious treat here as we are with THE HOBBIT and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

Gotta love this statement heard in the second featurette from Marshall-Green: "There's gonna be a lot of expectations... We're going to meet all those expectations." Wow. Powerful statement indeed. I'm getting a Tom hardy vibe from Marshall-Green a bit, are you?

Here's the movie's storyline:
Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. Dwayne Johnson Supports The 3D Decision On G.I. JOE: RETALIATION - So Do I...

Dwayne Johnson has chimed in on the move by Paramount to reschedule the launch of G.I. JOE: RETALIATION until March 29, 2013 so that the studio could add a 3D conversion. Many expressed their disappointment in having to wait after a somewhat good marketing effort had raised awareness to a fairly high level. Johnson replied to one of those concerned fans:

Others still have read rumors of advanced screenings that didn't look all that great and asked it's audience questions like: "How did you feel about (Channing Tatum) in the film?" and "Do you feel there should have been more of him...?"

It's probably a bit of both. Paramount wants to add the 3D conversion no doubt but that added time also gives them opportunity to address story and characters. Want more Tatum? Done. Want more head nodding to the fanboys? Done. And so on...

I think we will be in for a much better movie in the end, so have at it Paramount!

Must Watch: New Red Band Trailer For ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER

Ok, this is getting better now. I was worried for a bit there, but things seem to be picking up nicely with this latest red band trailer for ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER.

Check out Abe dealing out some massive melee damage with his +5 Axe of POTUS! Seriously though, the awesome slo-mo and the cinematic flavor for the movie is starting to show and I like it. The vampires look creepy enough and the energy has picked up.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter explores the secret life of our greatest President, and the untold story that shaped our nation. **SPOILER: New Movie Clip From PROMETHEUS!

Who's spoiled already? Want some more? The marketing team at Fox are making sure those of you who are on the fence on seeing PROMETHEUS (where are these people?) will have something more to think about.

I watched it. I more or less have to to be able to comment on it, but I can tell these things so you can make your own mind up:
  • It's short. A little over 30 seconds.
  • No creatures.
  • No visual spoilers.
  • Intense banter between David (Michael Fassbender) and Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron).
  • The discussion reveals several things about how these two characters interact in general and an enigmatic statement by David.
I was ok after seeing it - no worries on my end about ruining my viewing experience in theaters. Your call and YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Further notice - do NOT click through to PrometheusForum.net as there is a MEGA spoiler posted there with the video.

Here's the movie's storyline:
Ridley Scott, director of 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner,' returns to the genre he helped define. With 'Prometheus' he creates a groundbreaking mythology in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

PROMETHEUS opens on June 8. The movie was shot on 3ality Technica rigs.

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Going 3D! Moved To Spring 2013

Paramount has decided to delay the release of G.I. JOE:: RETALIATION until March 29, 2013 so that they can convert the movie to 3D.

Well of course G.I. JOE: RETALIATION would look better in 3D, but I would have thought the decision could have been made a lot earlier in the process. That said, I'm glad that Paramount has nuzzled up closer to 3D for the movie because I've been dying to see Snake Eyes in three dimensions!

Apparently a studio executive at Paramount disclosed to Deadline that: "We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally. Jim Cameron did all of Titanic‘s 3D in post – and look how well that movie turned out."

So as of today MarketSaw's coverage of G.I. JOE: RETALIATION begins again. I had already hoped that Jon Chu would take the project in three dimensions back when he was announced as director based on his 3D pedigree. I think Chu's visual style really lends itself well to 3D so even though he shot it in 2D there should be plenty of heart stopping moments for us in the conversion.

Check Out Cool New 3D Television Shows From Beampath3D!

Check out some cool new 3D television shows that Beampath3D has produced. These guys are serious about 3D and have lined up some very interesting stuff! Namely, a 3D shark documentary entitled SHARK DEFENDERS, a paranormal 3D series called ANOMALY 3D and a children's 3D television show - DOLPHIN LIFE 3D.

Here's the synopsis for SHARK DEFENDERS:
Monsters lurk in our oceans...
...and they are slaughtering an estimated 250,000 sharks PER DAY.
Shark Defenders 3D is the first made-for-3DTV documentary to chronicle research and conservation efforts to save rapidly diminishing shark populations. Coming soon to Next3D and other 3D TV outlets. Check back soon to view the Shark Defenders 3D trailer and for air dates.

Here's the synopsis for ANOMALY 3D:
Anomaly is the worlds-first 3D television program to focus on the paranormal and unexplained. Anomaly uses never-before-seen 3D night vision cameras and new production techniques to immerse viewers in the world’s most unusual and frightening locations. The show’s 1-hour docu-reality format is fast paced, entertaining and often chilling. You can download a preview of the show here, including 2D options if you're not set up for S3D yet.

In order to accomplish what Beampath3D have done to date, they have had to put on their inventor's hat as well. They have come up with some very cool technology to assist them in their 3D content creation including a NightVision Beamsplitter (clearly needed for ANOMALY 3D), a 4K Red Scarlet Beamsplitter and 3DHD Underwater capabilities.

You can catch these shows in 3D through Next3D, a company who delivers stereoscopic content to the home at the highest quality, over broadband, cable and satellite connections. They are a pay-per-view service with absolutely no monthly subscriptions or contracts. You need a broadband Internet connection, a PC + graphics card + NVIDIA's 3DVision or 3DTV Play software, 3D glasses, and a 3D-ready TV, projector or monitor. Next3D delivers these shows, plus movies, documentaries, sports and concerts too.

If you've got the equipment - check them out! I'll have more updates from these guys as it happens - they have some very cool things percolating!

RealD Expands Presence In China: Adds Bona Film Group

RealD said today that it has signed a deal to install 100 screens for the Bona Film Group of China. China continues to garner interest from Hollywood from multiple angles including production. Indeed the country has agreed to bring in multiple Hollywood movies a year and a large portion of those MUST be 3D. The Chinese have embraced the format and so it is a natural progression to see that RealD has stepped up their presence there.

RealD has also passed the 20,000 3D-equipped screen milestone back in April.

From the LATimes: "3-D technology gives moviegoers a more immersive visual experience, which takes the movie business to a new level,'' said Don Yu, chairman and CEO of Bona Film Group. "Bona strives for the highest industry standard, both in movie production and exhibition, which is why we selected RealD to equip all of our locations."

RealD already is supplying its 3-D technology to 650 cinema screens in China with commitments to add 1,400 more. Founded in 2003, RealD has grown into the world's largest licensor of 3-D cinema technology with approximately 20,200 screens in 68 countries.

The announcement is the latest among several deals between entertainment companies in the U.S. and China. On Sunday, Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group acquired AMC Entertainment, the nation's second largest theater circuit, for $2.6 billion.

Congratulations to RealD and Bona Film Group!

So What's Guillermo del Toro's PACIFIC RIM All About? Official Synopsis Revealed!

You guys are going to love what Guillermo del Toro has in store for us! I got the lowdown from a guy (Spydaweb) who is pretty close to the maestro director himself and he says this about the movie: "This isn’t quite what you’re expecting. In a good way."

He also says that we can expect a first reveal at San Diego's Comic-Con, so if you're already booked into attend the show - you're in luck!

We have also already heard unofficially that the movie will be in 3D.

Here's the storyline for PACIFIC RIM:
From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.”

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is directing “Pacific Rim” from a script by Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”). Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.

Warner Bros. has moved the release date of PACIFIC RIM to July 12, 2013.

Don't you love it?! Two pilots with a neural bridge? Oh yeah - can't wait to see what kind of problems can arise out of that scenario! What do you think of the synopsis?

IRON MAN 3 Starts Shooting Today: ~$200m Budget

Hot on the heels of THE AVENGERS, Marvel is starting to shoot IRON MAN 3 in Wilmington, NC's EUE/Screen Gems Studio. Apparently the production brings with it 550 high paying jobs and 1,000 talent opportunities (we saw the casting call here). Congrats if you're one of them!

Disney, being the shrewd mouse house it is, bought back the distribution for IRON MAN 3 from Paramount along with THE AVENGERS back in 2010 for $115m. Looking like a good deal now right guys? I'll say. I commented on how great it was to see Disney's commitment to the Marvel properties so early after acquiring the comic book company.

China will also play in part of the production of IRON MAN 3 as well as partially finance it. It is this financing deal and addition of a new director (Shane Black) that I am hopeful of a 3D movie this time around for Tony Stark. The scenes in THE AVENGERS with Iron Man swooping around were among the best of the 3D conversion movie.

Details on what's among the first locations in Wilmington? Here you go:
"Earlier this month, 'Iron Works Productions' submitted a filming permit application to the City of Wilmington on behalf of the film 'Caged' for permission to close down Chestnut Street between 2nd and 3rd streets from 5 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29. Two cast members, about 20 extras and 150 crew members will film an office scene at Cape Fear Club at 206 Chestnut St., according to the permit application."

IRON MAN 3 is slated for a May 2013 release.

MUST SEE: New Shots Of THE HOBBIT's Movie Set!!

WOW. Gorgeous as ever. I can't wait to be transported back to Hobbiton and into yet another adventure starting in the gorgeous greenery of The Shire.

If you happen to be in New Zealand you can now take a tour of all these spectacular sets through Rings Scenic Tours on the North Island near Matamata.

Says THE HOBBIT director Peter Jackson: "We are really excited to be able to offer fans of the films the chance to walk around and explore this beautifully crafted set, which is a centerpiece of both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit."

From Dailymail: Jackson first began the nine-month construction at the Alexander family farm on Buckland Road in 1999, thanks to the emerald rolling hills untouched by 20th century clutter such as roads, buildings, or power lines. The initial construction involved planting Barberry hedges, trees, and gardens. 37 hobbit holes were created and The Mill and double arch bridge were built. The large established tree placed in front of the lake was already perfect for the Hobbiton landscape, and it was renamed the 'party tree' since Hobbits are a merry folk who love nothing better than a good party.

J.R.R. Tolkien's first foray into Middle Earth has been split into two films, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, and the cast and crew endured a mammoth 254-day shoot to recreate the thousand-plus pages.

Jackson said: "You just get in that state of tiredness and stay there, but that's OK. The movie keeps you going. We're working with much of the same crew as Lord of the Rings and obviously some of the actors like Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, and Andy Serkis are back so it's like a reunion. Plus we've got all the new boys."

Jackson revealed that Martin Freeman has slipped easily into the Hobbit feet of his predecessor, Ian Holm: "He fits the ears, and he's got some very nice feet. I think he's got the biggest Hobbit feet we've got so far."

THE HOBBIT(s) are being shot on 3ality Technica rigs.

A New Trailer For The Upcoming Re-release Of Pixar's FINDING NEMO 3D!

A Pixar family favorite is returning to theaters but this time in 3D! Can't wait for FINDING NEMO. The new trailer shows off many shots from the movie that are going to look AMAZING in 3D. Underwater and animation movies have a special affinity with three dimensions so we're going to be in for a treat twice over.

Andrew Stanton's FINDING NEMO will be followed up with a couple of other Pixar animation 3D conversions, MONSTER'S INC. and THE LITTLE MERMAID to be released at later dates.

Here's the movie's storyline if you need a refresher:
In the colorful and warm tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef, a Clownfish named Marlin lives safe and secluded in a quiet cul-de-sac with his only son, NEMO. Fearful of the ocean and its unpredictable risks, he struggles to protect his son. Nemo, like all young fish, is eager to explore the mysterious reef. When Nemo is unexpectedly taken far from home and thrust into a dentist's office fish tank, Marlin finds himself the unlikely hero on an epic journey to rescue his son. In his quest, Marlin is joined by a good Samaritan named Dory, a Regal Blue Tang fish with the worst short-term memory and biggest heart in the entire ocean. As the two fish continue on their journey, encountering numerous dangers, Dory's optimism continually forces Marlin to find the courage to take risks and overcome his fears. In doing so, Marlin gains the ability to trust and believe, like Dory, that things will work out in the end. Confronting seabirds, sewer systems, and even man himself, father and son's fateful separation ends in triumph. And the once-fearful Marlin becomes a true hero in the eyes of his son, and the entire ocean.

Look for FINDING NEMO in theaters on September 14.

**SAME DAY UPDATE! New TRAILER AND IMAGE From THE GREAT GATSBY Featuring DiCaprio, Maguire And Bollywood's Bachchan

**SAME DAY UPDATE - The trailer has now been released for the movie as well!! Get your first look at what is in store for us with this classic tale.

It's hard to get a feeling for the storyline from the trailer but the visuals are astounding! Imagine this in 3D!

Amitabh Bachchan is very well known in India but THE GREAT GATSBY will actually be his first Hollywood appearance. He is playing Meyer Wolfsheim, a suave money lender alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire in the shot.

Unfortunately for Bachchan it is only a cameo as he won't be in the rest of director Baz Luhrmann's movie but the shot looks gorgeously lit and composed.

Here's the official storyline for the movie:
THE GREAT GATSBY follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

THE GREAT GATSBY opens on December 25. The movie was shot on 3ality Technica rigs.

Must Watch: New PROMETHEUS Featurette With Charlize Theron!

**Some visual spoilers in this clip** Nothing too outrageous though. No creature shots for example.

This is a great little featurette featuring one of the smarter characters that will be in PROMETHEUS. Well, they all seem smartly created - but Vickers (played by Charlize Theron) just seems to be a notch above everyone else. Something's definitely up with that character - but what? Lots of speculation on the interwebs.

Say Theron: "She really is in many ways the character that goes against everything that everybody else is there to do."

Sure, there's parallels to past 'corporate characters' from the ALIEN franchise - but my feeling is Ridley Scott has something special planned for us. Something different. Time will tell...

Here's the movie's storyline:
Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

PROMETHEUS enters our atmosphere on June 8!

You Sank My BATTLESHIP! Third Weekend In A Row Owned By THE AVENGERS - Soon To Be In Top 5 Of All Time *AND* Some Disc Release Info!

BATTLESHIP never really stood a chance against the behemoth known as THE AVENGERS. The ensemble Marvel movie took in an astounding $55,050,000 in it's third week of domestic bliss bringing it's total up to $457m (US and Canada) thus far. Peter Berg's BATTLESHIP meanwhile took in $25,350,000 in it's first weekend.

THE AVENGERS is now Disney's biggest box office success topping the top two PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films. Up next on the ladder? STAR WARS. That should happen THIS weekend propelling the superhero movie into 5th on the all time list.

So the obvious question is will THE AVENGERS defeat MEN IN BLACK III this coming weekend? I'm pretty sure this won't happen. MIB3 carries a huge fanbase into the theaters and let's face it, it is Will Smith. So, will it would be cool to see Marvel / Disney continue swinging it's big stick, it's time for another 3D movie to step in and clobber some aliens...

New Movie Clip From BRAVE - Plus FOUR Classic Pixar Movies Returning To Theaters!

Pixar has released a new movie clip from their upcoming Scottish tale BRAVE and I'm really enjoying the comedy in this film so far.

PLUS, AMC Theaters are exclusively releasing the following Pixar classics on Memorial Day weekend: UP, TOY STORY 3, RATATOUILLE and WALL-E. Not only that but these re-releases will enjoy an extra low ticket price of $6! All of these cool screening will also pre-roll a behind the scenes look at BRAVE.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

I would love to check out these affordable screenings but there are no AMC locations near me unfortunately. If you get a chance to get out and enjoy - let us know.
